Changing the Lives of the Most Unfortunate, One Meal at a Time.
St. Ann’s Episcopal Church is a true beacon of faith and lives out its faith by selfless service to the community. In a small area of New York City lies a destitute population with an average salary of below 10k per YEAR.
Food access in marginalized communities can be remarkably limited, especially among the most destitute. Within the state of New York, and in the South Bronx, there is a community that is among the lowest income, impoverished areas in the nation. Many households in this area earn less than ten thousand dollars per year, so help with food and clothing is imperative to ensure survival, especially in New York, where temperatures are dangerously cold every winter.
As this is a population with a very high percentage of Hispanic families and individuals (Kozol, 1995), the issues facing this population relate back to the tendency for minority individuals and families to be housed or corralled into increasingly poorer sections if they aren’t able to work and survive in the suburbs of the city. This in turn limits their access to so many things such as adequate health care, the ability to get a job because of lack of support.
