What I Learned about the Bolivian Constitutional Crisis and Step Down

I have to confess…I know pretty much nothing about this topic as my studies (embarrassingly so) stopped during my collegiate journey about 3 years ago.

Having known multiple wonderful people who were born in Bolivia, I am ashamed that I know less about the current state of affairs, so when I heard about the possible election fraud and step down of the current(now ex) president of Bolivia, my conscience was pricked. Here is what I found out.

Evo Morales:

  1. President for almost 14 years.
  2. Term limits had been abolished recently and Morales used this amendment to run for another term.
  3. Rival disputed his election and international pressure called for results to be annulled and recounted/restarted.
  4. Morales stepped down, claiming a coup had been committed.
  5. Citizens of Bolivia rejoicing over resignation.
  6. Venezuela and other well known Communist countries agreed with Morales and called it a coup as well.
  7. Championed the industry of coca-growing, leading its main supporting…
